9 Restaurant Chains Closing Locations In 2024

Cracker Barrel

Cracker Barrel shuttered four restaurants in April: Sacramento, California; Santa Maria, California; Medford, Oregon; and Columbia, South Carolina.


Applebee's has had multiple closures in recent years, shuttering over 300 stores since 2017. Applebee's closed 46 locations last year, and it's closing even more this year.

TGI Fridays

TGI Fridays announced the closing of 36 "underperforming" outlets in select U.S. markets earlier this year. This decision was part of the company's "ongoing growth strategy," according to a news release.


Denny's intends to close 10 to 20 sites by 2024, according to its earnings report. According to Restaurant Dive, these would slow the rate of closures compared to previous year.

Boston Market

Boston Market has been in decline for some time, with widespread closures, legal concerns, and other financial difficulties. In 2023, the restaurant chain had over 300 locations.

Mod Pizza

Mod Pizza, a fast-casual restaurant franchise with 27 locations in 11 states and the District of Columbia, will close in March 2024. The shutdown impacted restaurants in California, Philadelphia, Chicago, Dallas, and Washington, D.C.


In February, this regional restaurant business closed eight locations in North and South Carolina. Six of the closures occurred in North Carolina, which now has four PDQ facilities. South Carolina no longer has PDQ stores.

Outback Steakhouse

Bloomin' Brands, the parent company of Outback Steakhouse, Carrabba's Italian Grill, and Bonefish Grill, said on its fourth-quarter earnings call in February that it had closed 41 "underperforming locations."


Following a wave of closures in 2023, Hardee's closed numerous further locations this year. In Central Illinois, the chain closed locations in Champaign, Chatham, Monticello, Springfield, and Virden.
